UAB Mini Medical School

On October 13-14, the UAB Mini Medical School Program hosted an informative and interactive educational session focused on nursing education, career exploration, and human anatomy.

Each session was led by Dr. Crystal Freeman, Birmingham City Schools Health Science Coordinator, who introduced participants to the various educational pathways available for individuals interested in pursuing a career in nursing.

During the presentation, participants learned about the different routes to obtaining a nursing degree, beginning at the undergraduate level and extending to advanced nursing education and professional development opportunities. The discussion highlighted the importance of education and continued learning in preparing for a career in nursing. Participants had the opportunity to expand their understanding of the nursing profession and explore potential pathways toward future careers in healthcare.

In addition to learning about nursing education and career opportunities, students participated in a hands-on activity focused on identifying the bones of the human body. Dr. Freeman guided students through an introduction to the human skeletal system, using a colorful skeletal diagram to help them recognize and locate various bones. This visual learning approach helped make anatomical concepts more accessible and encouraged students to actively engage with the material.

To reinforce their understanding of the skeletal system, students created their own skeleton models using various types of pasta. This creative, hands-on activity allowed participants to apply what they had learned while developing their observation skills, strengthening their understanding of basic anatomy, and exploring science in an engaging and memorable way. The activity also demonstrated how interactive learning experiences can help connect classroom concepts with practical applications in healthcare.
