Special Education

Special education is specially designed instruction that enables a student with a disability to access and progress in the general curriculum.  Special education is provided in the least restrictive environment at no charge to the student's parents.

What Services Are Available Through The Special Education Department?

  • Processing of referrals for evaluation

  • Individual evaluation to determine eligibility for special education as described by IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Act)

  • Instructional support and services to eligible students with disabilities as defined under IDEA and as prescribed by an Individualized Education Program (IEP)

  • Enrichment services to students determined eligible for Gifted services

What Is Child Find?

Child Find is a statewide effort by the Alabama State Department of Education and the Department of Rehabilitation Services to locate, identify, and evaluate children with disabilities from birth to age 21.
