The Woodlawn Colonels boys and girls basketball teams were selected by Hibbett Sports as a First String programs for the 2026-2027 season.
During a press conference at Boutwell Auditorium, Hibbett Sports, in partnership with Nike, donated to the Woodlawn High School basketball program and committed $40,000 in scholarship support. In addition, the company provided each scholar-athlete with a pair of Nike basketball shoes and a First String gym bag.
Mayor Randall Woodfin delivered remarks, with City Councilor Brian Gunn, Birmingham City Schools Instructional Superintendent Dr. Janice Drake and Woodlawn Principal Rameka Davis present for the program. Woodlawn alumnus and track star Jayla Kirkland was among the Hibbett representatives on hand.
After the ceremony, the teams were able to put their new shoes to the test during a shoot-around on the court at Boutwell. Basketball teams from Alabama A&M, Samford, Alabama, Auburn, and more will compete on the same court this week as part of the Ballin at Boutwell exhibition.
First String is a philanthropic initiative launched by Hibbett in partnership with Nike aimed at empowering the next generation of student-athletes. Only four schools are selected each year, with Wenonah and Huffman among the previous First String programs.
