After last year’s revival, the SpeakFirst: Birmingham Urban Debate League is returning for the 2026-2027 school year with sights set on further elevating the oratory skills of Birmingham City Schools scholars. 

Middle and high school students will compete in six tournaments this academic year. The first debate of the Fall schedule will be Thursday, September 24 at Wenonah High School, followed by October 15 at Wenonah and November 19 at C.W. Hayes K-8 School. Each debate is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. Winter/spring schedules will be released at a later date.

Birmingham City Schools is continuing its partnership with Impact America’s SpeakFirst to provide engaging debate experiences that challenge students to think critically, articulate their ideas effectively, and engage respectfully with diverse perspectives. 

“Participation in debate helps students strengthen essential literacy skills, including reading comprehension, research, evidence-based argumentation, public speaking, and active listening,” said Dr. Kristie Williams, Birmingham City Schools Literacy & Humanities Curriculum Coordinator for grades 6-8. “These experiences align with our commitment to preparing students for success in college, careers, and civic life.

More than 60 scholars from 14 middle and high schools participated in the first tournament held at A.H. Parker High School tonight! Competitions will continue throughout the Spring.
