Hayes K-8 School Second Grade Teacher Madison Abney, the 2026-2027 Elementary Teacher of the Year for Birmingham City Schools, continues to receive accolades for excellence in education.

Representatives from the JLab Birmingham Bowl and ESPN, along with board members and district leaders, presented Abney with a $1,000 gift card, a prize package and a certificate during a surprise presentation in her classroom today. 

Abney was recognized as part of College Football Playoff Foundation’s Extra Yard for Teachers Week, an annual weeklong celebration to honor great teachers.
