Birmingham City Schools will continue to enforce the guidelines set in 2025 for attendance at district sporting events to help create a safe and enjoyable environment.
Initially adopted in August 2025, the guidelines dictate that all youths under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult for the entire event, and adults must have a valid ID. The guidelines take effect immediately.
“Safety is a priority in Birmingham City Schools,” said Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan in the 2025 announcement. “In recent months, we’ve invested in hi-tech scanners as well as alert systems for our school employees. These new guidelines are part of our ongoing commitment to safety and security in our schools and facilities as well as our events.”
In addition to the guidelines on age and adult ID, the district is also requiring spectators to remain seated in the stands during the games, and loitering or group gatherings in the aisles, concourses, ramps, entrances, or exits will be prohibited.
Birmingham City Schools will also continue to enforce the long-standing clear-bag policy for athletic events.
“We have exciting sporting events throughout our district – especially in our high school and middle school sports,” Dr. Sullivan said. “We want families and friends to fill the stands to cheer for the athletes, the bands, and cheerleaders. But we want everyone to be assured of a safe and pleasant environment.
The district will continue receiving support from the Birmingham Police Department and BCS Security at all games. The superintendent said BCS leaders will monitor trends and activities at the games -- adjusting guidelines as needed.
Full guidelines are available in English and Spanish on the BCS website.
