Scholars prep for Harvard Debate Club trip

Ten outstanding Birmingham City Schools students are preparing for a transformative academic experience this summer as they travel to Harvard University next month to participate in the prestigious Harvard Debate Council Summer Workshops.

To help students sharpen their public speaking, critical thinking, and argumentation skills before attending the national program, SpeakFirst is hosting a three-day debate bootcamp June 22-24, 2026.

The intensive training will provide students with hands-on instruction in debate fundamentals, persuasive communication, research techniques, and competitive debate strategies. The bootcamp will serve as a launching pad for students selected to represent Birmingham at the Harvard Debate Council Summer Workshops, one of the nation's premier academic enrichment programs.

*This opportunity equips students with skills that extend far beyond the debate stage, Dr. Mark Sullivan, Superintendent of Birmingham City Schools said. "Participants gain confidence, strengthen their communication abilities, and develop the critical thinking skills necessary for success in college, careers, and civic engagement."
