At the Alabama Bandmasters Association’s annual Music Performance Assessment for District 4, four of the ten Birmingham City Schools bands participating earned a Superior rating, the highest honor available!
G.W. Carver, A.H. Parker, Wenonah, and Booker T. Washington bands each scored Superior, with five other bands earning Excellent ratings.

“This achievement was not easy. It reflects the dedication, discipline, and passion of our students and the commitment of our outstanding band directors, who spent hundreds of hours rehearsing and preparing for this moment,” said Dr. Debora Mayes, Coordinator of Arts Education. “Their hard work truly paid off, and we celebrate their success!”
Held at Thompson High School on March 2-5, the District 4 Music Performance Assessment event included bands from many outstanding programs across the region. Among the schools participating were Hoover, Clay-Chalkville, Minor, Homewood, Thompson, Vestavia, Helena, Chelsea, Mountain Brook, Briarwood Christian, Bragg, Berry, Montevallo, Gardendale, Hewitt-Trussville, Calera, Fultondale, Tarrant, Hueytown, Shelby County, Corner, Shades Valley, Mortimer Jordan, Liberty Park, Pelham, Spain Park, Pleasant Grove, Oak Mountain, Erwin, John Carroll Catholic, Oak Grove, Bessemer City, Pinson, and Center Point, among others.
“We are incredibly proud of these students and educators for representing Birmingham City Schools with excellence and dedication!” said Dr. Mayes. “These results will assist principals in reviewing the teachers’ work and assisting them in determining if quality instruction is taking place in the classroom and after school rehearsals.”
