Governor Kay Ivey recognized Washington K-8 School tonight during her State of the State Address as one of Alabama’s Most Improved Turnaround Schools.
This recognition highlights the school’s significant academic progress and continued commitment to student achievement.
This recognition reflects Washington K-8’s remarkable gains in student performance, as evidenced by its increased scores on the most recent Alabama State Report Card. The school’s growth underscores the effectiveness of focused instructional strategies, dedicated educators, and strong community partnerships.

In addition to this recognition, Washington K-8 has achieved several notable milestones, including:
Designation as a Nationally Certified STEM Campus (2025), affirming its commitment to innovative, hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for future careers.
Launch of a Dual Language Immersion Program, expanding global learning opportunities and supporting Birmingham City Schools’ broader vision for multilingual education.
Continued academic growth and strategic improvements aligned with turnaround school success indicators.
