Each month, the Birmingham Board of Education recognizes the employees who go above and beyond the call of duty to make the district a better place, even when no one is looking.
These employees are critical to establishing and maintaining a positive culture and a safe, secure, and nurturing learning environment. They inspire their colleagues and our students to pursue excellence, serve others, and collaborate effectively towards common goals.
During its regularly scheduled board meeting on August 12, the board recognized Ms. Kian Threadgill and Mr. John Edwards, counselors at A.H. Parker High School, for Going Above and Beyond. The nomination reads:
āMs. Kian Threadgill and Mr. John Edwards are both committed to our scholars and ensuring their success. They worked diligently to make sure that all students had schedules the first week of school. This is no small task, considering the fact that we have almost 1,000 students at Parker. It requires a lot of hard work and coordination.
āMs. Threadgill and Mr. Edwards ensured that students were placed appropriately in core courses, as well as electives in a manner that gives them a good blend of learning opportunities and challenges throughout the semester.
āOur students at A.H. Parker High School were ready for instruction on Day One, and because of the long hours and attention to detail from our counselors our school was able to better serve our scholars.ā
In addition, Birmingham Board of Education members who were recognized by Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan for completing their 2024-2025 School Board Governance training by the Alabama Association of School Boards.

Finally, the board passed a resolution honoring the 100th anniversary of the Alabama State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (ASAHPERD). Through advocacy, professional development, and best practices promotion, the organization fosters the health and wellness of students, educators, and communities.
āBirmingham City Schools acknowledges the profound impact of ASAHPERDās work over the past century and expresses its gratitude for the organizationās steadfast dedication to improving the quality of education and the lives of students and teachers,ā reads a portion of the resolution.
