After five years under the leadership of Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan, Birmingham City Schools has not only improved academic achievement but also emerged as a leader among Alabama school districts.
According to a study of 8,000 school districts in 30 states, Alabama is the only state where average mathematics proficiency has surpassed pre-pandemic achievement. Among districts in the state, Birmingham City Schools ranks first in math recovery and seventh in the nation.
During a press conference held today, Birmingham City Schools revealed the study results as well as announced that the district has achieved its highest grade from the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP) and reduced the number of failing schools to its lowest number since the inception of the program. Full results of 2024-2025 ACAP testing will be released later this year.
To achieve these results, Birmingham City Schools implemented several strategies to increase engagement and growth, including extending enrichment through intersession programs and providing high-dosage tutoring to boost academic achievement.
